Summer camp is fast approaching at Yujo Nyusanji Temple!
The summer camp is a unique opportunity for everyone to deepen their Zen practice. It’s called ango, which translates in Japanese as peaceful retreat or remaining at peace, an essential gathering for the sangha.
It’s a thousand-year-old tradition that we perpetuate every year. It dates back to the time of the Buddha in India, where he would retreat with his disciples during the rainy season.
The camp brings together monks, nuns, bodhisattvas, and all those who wish to have an authentic experience!
Stepping through the door of a Zen temple is choosing to pause, to withdraw from the hustle and bustle of social life, to rediscover calm and serenity, and to connect with oneself. It’s a significant moment in the year and a precious interlude for complete rejuvenation.
A summer camp is divided into three sessions of approximately ten days each. There is generally a five- to six-day preparation period followed by three or four days of sesshin (a period of more intensive practice).
Each day is structured around zazen, participation in traditional temple daily tasks, samu (Zen cooking, gardening, maintenance, etc.), as well as sewing the kesa, do-in, shiatsu, yoga, and more.
Summer camp is also about meeting new people, reconnecting with the sangha, and enjoying the fresh mountain air on hikes. Playing sports, having fun (one evening planned per session), all while being present in the here and now.

2nd session (27 July – 4 August): Master Ryurin Christophe Desmur
