Suffering and Love.
Mondo with Master Deshimaru

What is suffering and why do we suffer?
It is the spirit which suffers. If the spirit is anxious, it suffers. If the root of this anxiety is cut, suffering disappears. Buddha himself asked this same question. The ego suffers because of itself. Without ego suffering doesn’t exist. This suffering arises from the consciousness which it has of life, family, desires, the future.
This is the reason that buddhism recommends cutting ties with the family, with money, with society, etc. But this only applies at the level of the spirit, not on the level of form. If you cut your love for your family, you will, as a consequence, be able to really love them, deeply, without egoism. This love arises from our understanding of our own egoism. This is true love, without goal or profit, universal and eternal. Suffering disappears in this moment. Love, work, cease causing suffering, because the root cause has been cut and one is “as if in a coffin”. Inside everybody nothing will remain. Abandoning the ego is true happiness. Nevertheless, externally one’s life continues, one loves, one works. There is no contradiction in this. It is our “natural condition” which allows harmony with others, thanks to true internal freedom and true simplicity.
The meaning of religion is to follow this internal freedom and not to follow a morale. True religion is to harmonise oneself with the outside, with society, with everyone around us. Such is the place of the bodhisattva, the place of the monk. The problem for all religions is to overcome suffering. This problem is the root of all spiritual life. Death is the greatest suffering. For this reason we need a spiritual life.

This passage of the Hannya Shingyo is very important. It underlies the second principle of Buddhism, the principle of the twelve links of interdependence (innen, also known as innenka). What is this principle?
These 12 factors are the interactions that determine the process of life and phenomenal existence ---------------------------------------------------
Mumyo, ignorance, is the first innen /
Gyo, action, is the second innen
Shiki, consciousness, is the third innen
Myo-shiki, body and mind, is the fourth innen
Roku-nyu, six sense organs, the fifth innen
Shoku, contact, the six innen
Ju, perception, the seventh innen
Ai, desire, the eighth innen
Shu, attachment, the ninth innen
U, possession, the tenth innen
Sho, becoming, the eleventh innen /
Ro shi, old age and death, the twelfth innen ---------------------------------------------------
[In ku] there is neither ignorance (mu mumyo), nor end of ignorance (mu mumyo jin)
and so on (nai shi) [for the other innen]

there is neither old age and death (mu ro shi), nor the end of old age and death (mu ro shi jin)

The Perfect Way is not difficult
One must only avoid grabbing or rejecting.
When both, love and hate, are absent
everything becomes clear and diaphanous.
Never the less, make the most minimal distinction
and Heaven and Earth become infinitely separated.
If you seek the truth,
do not maintain any opinion in favour or against.
The struggle between what one likes and what one dislikes
is the sickness of the mind.

fragment from the Shin jin mei (Poem of faith and spirit)

Body-mind (pt.1)

When Master Nyojo gave the Dharma Transmission to Dogen in the ceremony in his room he had already received an instruction for seven days. His understanding of Zen was complete - but this didn’t mean that Dogen stopped practicing Zazen.
Nyojo said to him: “I have given you the teaching of the pure essence of Zen. Even if you didn’t take notes, you should remember it. I give you the kesa and the bowl - Zen symbols for the essence of Buddha transmitted by Bodhidharma. Today you have understood the deep meaning of this teaching, not with your consciousness and intelligence, but with your body. Only you understand, the others haven’t grasped this essence. I could die right now without regret. Now the spirit of the Transmission has been written intimately, directly, secretly.

In Buddhism, in Zen, “spirit” - shin -, is sometimes translated as “heart”. The Chinese say “spirit-heart”, but really it means “the spirit of Buddha” - Bodai - not of a mythical Buddha, not an image of Buddha, but rather the Buddha which exists in everybody. Buddha means “eternal”.

The nature of Buddha is the cosmic energy present in every life. The spirit of Buddha is present in all places. To become Buddha is to recognise this fact, to notice it. This spirit is not limited to the body of Buddha Shakyamuni; it is the Universal Spirit, the true Universal Body which is also not limited to our own body. The Universal Body is the body of all existences. All the existences which come and go in the Great Ocean, which appear and disappear like the waves: everybody has the Body of Buddha, everybody has the spirit of Buddha even without knowing it, even without recognising it.
